Otýlie Foldynová, newly in a relationship with virtuoso pianist Mikuláš Vyvý, makes the most of their time together. But the couple barely has time to settle into a routine before Mikuláš’s ambitious project takes off. Driven by goodwill and her own intentions, Otýlie decides to come along on the world tour to assist with the filming, despite Pepa’s antagonism and her own inexperience.
Nothing could prepare Otýlie, from the quiet Czech town of Liškov, for the harsh realities exposed by the world’s gaping wounds, or the complex dynamics within the film crew. As she treads uncanny paths with Mikuláš and works alongside different people in foreign lands, she relies on her wits and her trust in the pianist’s mission to find a footing and navigate the growing pains of a transforming spirit.
DISCLAIMER: While the book touches on the refugee crisis, it is not its main focus. Readers should be aware that the story still references refugee camps, displaced populations and territories in crisis. The Werths hope readers will honor the privilege of being removed from such hardships, and consider ways to help, whether with time, effort, advocacy, money, or by making a genuine effort in getting to know and building connections with the different other. All net profits from this book will go to the IRC. Below are other organizations actively intervening at the forefront of the refugee crisis, in Yemen and worldwide, despite severe budget cuts in recent years.
